Georgia is called by some the "Empire State of the South," indicating its prominence in Southern culture, including food. Fried green tomatoes, open-pit barbeque, and other examples of Southern cuisine can all be found in Georgia, which is the largest state west of the Mississippi.
Savannah sits on the relatively short seaside Georgia has which meets the Atlantic Ocean, and fresh seafood is a feature of that city's dining. Visitors can sample that city's seafood at the Savannah Seafood Festival held every May.
Georgia is alternately known as the Peach State due to peaches grown there. Other locally grown specialties inclde pecans and onions from around the town of Vidalia.
